About the Design

The biblical heroine Judith was a beautiful widow who saved her people by seducing and beheading the Assyrian general Holofernes on the eve of his attack on her city, Bethulia. Like the young David, she personifies the principle of turning perceived weakness into a tactical advantage.

This woodcut illustration was created by the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff for the Nuremberg Chronicle, first published in 1493. The text reads: "Judith," "Holofernes."
